How to Check Your Spiritual GPS

Do you wonder what’s the right direction to take?
Are life’s conflicting signals confusing you?
Have you lost your spiritual GPS?

Recently, a vivid dream neatly taught me what to do next–
but like the wise fisherman, it wasn’t going to just hand me the tasty fish…

“The Dream Scene:

I’m an African-American man, with six or seven friends surrounding one pleasant but stressed-looking man in his late twenties. Our friend faces a difficult decision.

He has to make really tough choices NOW:

Does he take a big risk for the job & career he really wants? There’s no guarantee he’ll succeed. Failure would prove costly.

Does he marry the pretty young lady standing near him, who’s sweetly stressing him for a ring? We can tell he cares about her, but she’s “not quite the one”. We sense he’d be bending to make her happy–
or avoid her displeasure.

Proverbial buckets of sweat begin to brim on his forehead. We silently give him time for his choice. The young lady gives him a bitty tweak of a smile that says, “You’d better choose me.”

The poor guy’s about to spring a leak, melt down like a reactor or run for the hills, we can’t tell which.

On an inspiration I ask, “Do you want to know how to choose?”

He looks at me with hope & incredulity, like a drowning man would who’s asked if he prefers a life preserver or not.

“You have to take the high road,” I tell him.

“How do I find it?”

Everybody looks at me as if to say, “This had better be good now you’ve opened your mouth Scott!”

These words tumble out:

“Ask.”

“The High-Way is the drive-way God intends you to drive your life upon.”

I repeat this slowly, once, then twice. Everybody’s so in sync with this saying, they smile & nod their heads in agreement.

A fourth time I state this truth, everybody spontaneously recites it with me:

“The High-Way is the drive-way God intends you to drive your life upon.”

A grin of relief breaks through the very tense cloud on our friend’s face.

He understands:

He can get his answer–
by asking his Higher Guidance System.

Anything else would be muddled, half-blind, possibly manipulative guidance.

But his Higher Guidance–
his spiritual GPS–
won’t give him the easy route–
it will give him the BEST route from the perspective of Wisdom.

He has to be willing to lift up his eyes, his energies and his intentions.

Yes, his spiritual GPS will guide him to the High-Way that’s the drive-way God INTENDS him to drive his life upon.

He just has to FOLLOW IT.

The Dream ends with us feeling satisfied, almost giddily happy.”

So remember my friend, your Spiritual GPS is just waiting for you to check–
& keep recalibrating as needed along the High-Way of your life!

Ask me for help if you like.

Are We Still Playing The Game of Fragments?

Brace yourself:

I’m about to tell you a radical, probably shocking secret. (But I’m going to make you wait.)

In a world as topsy-turvy as ours, any claim of the ability to shock us might be considered presumptuous. Maybe even egomaniacal.

After all, we’re stuck in a “civilization” that wallows in the deepest slime of corruption. Groans under the weight of horrid slick tales of blood-splashed brutality and greed-splashed stupidity.

We’ve penned up the world’s healthy wildness, humanity’s ingenious native wisdom & bull-dozed them into cesspools.

Are we waiting for every last remote chance of their revival to dissolve?

Are we “the 99%” actually teamed up with “the 1%” to turn Earth into a shanty museum where the most beautiful and good lay frozen in panoramic exhibits of the past?

Are we waiting until that silent deadline when the simple clarity of enjoying living blue seas, of non-slime-slicked oceans, of non-cracked, non-fracked, non-heart-attacked lands with more beasts thriving than monster bugs & rats, has slipped horribly from the fringes of our reality?

Are we blindly waiting until livid red volcanoes of subconsciously suppressed hate, denied fear, unbridled toxic intent, so swamp our cities with psychic lava of hopelessness that humanity’s forced to cower in a prison corner of Creation?

Let’s be completely honest with ourselves here. Nobody’s watching or judging us in this moment–
except, of course, our most scrupulous exacting taskmasters–
our inner selves.

So we must ask ourselves, because to avoid these harsh questions is to embrace the most deadly mediocrity:

Will we continue to curdle our ethics so sourly that the most shallow behavior, most self-congratulatory criminality, most imbecilic violence are celebrated with no sadness?

Can’t our jaded eyes see how our personal integrity, holistic usefulness & sense of community suffer by being reduced to embarrassing court jesters performing in the royal courts of the rich?

Can’t we see how we–
from the most religious to the most atheistic–
from the most advanced intellectuals to the most incurable simpletons–

all of us seem stuck in a unexplainable waiting game?

For sure, our wait’s well-camouflaged. By sheer cleverness of denials and sheer urgency of private worries.

As a result, some of us, frozen, await Jesus Christ’s return.
Some of us expect the next Buddha, the next Iman Mahdi, the next great Caesar to relieve our responsibilities.

Some of us pretend to expect the next great President, the next great corporation, the next great Mayan 2012 calendar date to force our hands, to cleanse our festering wounds–
or the next great & horrible enemy to slap us awake.

Some of us await the landing of the UFOs or the all-saving kindness of our Space Neighbors to revive us, or the next stupendous drug to make us less stupid–
or so stupefied we won’t feel our pain.

Or, the next 1-chance-in-77-million of winning the lottery, the next fated sweet encounter with a soul mate, the next corporate bail-out, the next public hand-out, the next death of an unknown rich uncle…

But what are we waiting for?

Are we really happy with waiting for a dozen different quantum reality versions of a Jesus to wave his wand & decree with finality to each of us in turn,
“You, bad…
You, good…
You, losers…
You, the champs…
You, the chimps”?

Or to distract us with fears of suffering beneath the lash of the next “You’re fired”, “You’re too old”, or “Guess what–you’re doomed, you’re damned & you’re dead!”

Now we’ve force-fed ourselves these tough questions, here’s Part One of that radical shocking secret:

Our waiting time is over.
Our waiting game is already up.
Our ancient tired legends & prized excuses have already surrendered their vitality.
Collapsed like sacred but useless sands of time slip-sliding into the hourglass’ bottom.

The clock already strikes past midnight for the human race.

What does this mean?

It means our past is dead. Our denial is dying.
And here we are.
Naked.
Awakening.
Scared.
Crying out for our Mamas & Papas.

But here we are.
One human family, utterly bored at playing The Game of Fragments.

Can you sense the return of your trust?
Can you feel a strange new calm?
Can you feel your fears of abandonment dissolve?

Can you feel your first deep stirrings of an ancient competence?
Can you admit you believe in your own soul’s wisdom?

Can you abandon your fears that our bridge to The New World is too shaky, too endless, too painful to cross?

Can you stop theorizing about what awaits you on the far side?
Stop squabbling about who deserves to cross & who deserves to stay behind in the Old Darkness?

Can you just be happy with putting one foot in front of the other?
With helping your neighbor who feels too lost or afraid, too ignorant or worthless, to take his or her next small step?

Can you taste your desire to emerge safely on the other side?
To reach new lands & dimensions of greater adventure?

Can you picture with your inner eye & your hidden hearing & your unused heart strength, what it might be like–
no, what it WILL be like–
for you to set foot on that promised shore?

Do you dare imagine the sweet new taste of your freedoms?
Your soul’s secret delight at everyone winning The Game of Fragments?
Can you imagine the awaiting Game of a higher, healthier, happier Reality?

If you can, are you willing to arrive safely–
are you willing for us ALL to arrive safely–
whatever the nature of this Promised Shore–

on that peaceful Island Earth whose pure freshness tugs at our attention–
whose lightening gravity demands we command & commit our energies–
to unchain our futures from self punishment and recrimination
over ancient memories of Paradises Lost–

No matter what the cost?

Are you ready?

I believe you are ready.

I believe I am, too.
Because Reality demands this.

I even believe some of us might already have arrived.
This very minute, crowded around by unseen angels they wave & yell for us.

To snap us from our self hypnosis.

To guide us by the crystalline ring of their voices until the low fog lifts
and reveals that far shore, now startlingly close.

Almost at our feet.

To quicken our steps on our way back Home.

Do You Ask God Questions? Listen for Answers?

My Unusual Spiritual Experience Can Help You

One painful summer afternoon, I sat alone on a black wrought iron bench in the center of a monastery’s lush green lawn. I was determined to do what I had to do:

Talk to God. Ask tough questions. And hear the answers, like it or not.

I meditated, then wrote down my sincere questions in this Letter to Christ–and His Reply:

I didn’t demand a response, but a tingle inside told me I’d get one. I was ready. I’d been “almost ready” for too long.

A sleepy butterfly hovered over my hot bench while I waited. The sun beat down like a silent hammer, but I waited.

Finally the silence ended. Crisp words began to blow through me like gusts of fresh air in a worried sail. I wrote without censorship or fear–I had to record it exactly as I got it.

I just imagined that this was a wise old friend talking, who hadn’t visited me in ages. Every word of our conversation was precious for me to record.

As I wrote, the sun seemed to glow instead of shine. I felt a great comfortable warmth.

Later–as I still sat alone on the bench–I would second-guess myself. Maybe I wrote down certain words wrong? Would Christ, or would God, really say that? Hmmm. So I corrected myself and I fussed, and meditated. I crossed-out and uncrossed-out some words in a lengthy process until I was certain all was correct.

Then I realized: I’d “corrected” the transcript until it read exactly the way I’d first written it down!

…This brings the conversation back to YOU.

If you don’t try to get direct answers from God or Christ or whomever you pray to–why wait any longer?

Maybe you don’t think you deserve any answers? Or you couldn’t handle them? Or you might hear wrong?

It’s really okay. God allows us to be abundantly imperfect. This question-and-answer process is both possible and good.

You don’t need to write a Russian novel. God accepts postcards, and probably tweets too.

You can ask about anything. It’s your personal secret.

Maybe you fear that the answer you get might conflict with what religious leaders say is correct? Maybe the answer might not agree with what you are hoping to hear?

Relax. If this happens, remember we’re all here to learn and grow. Your Creator always supports you for trying. For caring!

No true religion will tell you that you don’t have the right to ask God questions–and get answers! Because the religions & the spiritual paths are for mankind’s help.

To prepare to receive your guidance, you can affirm, “I am loved by God. My Creator is my friend. I affirm this true relationship on a new and deeper level than ever before. I release all past experiences that deny this truth.”

“I have the right to ask. I have the right to listen. I have the right to know God cares–no matter what He says to me.”

Affirm this again and again. Pray that you be surrounded with Divine Love, Light and Protection. Pray that what you receive be only from God or from the highest servant of God available–be that an angel, a teacher of yours in Heaven or in the Spirit World.

Start to write when the feeling’s right. Then–listen with the same welcoming openness as you would to a long-lost friend of yours. Suddenly back in your life, standing in your doorway before you.

In my experience spiritually counseling so many people over the years, here’s the main reason why people don’t hear answers to their questions to God:

Because they forget to let their hearts listen. They try to judge whether every word is perfect, or perfectly acceptable, before they’ve even heard it!

Don’t worry if you get earth-shaking results or not. You might see colors or hear music or sense a couple words that stand out like an eagle silhouetted against a cloud. Any answer feels incredible.

Remember, God has every thing on Earth available to use to speak to you.

Your answer might not be heard right away. It might come to you from a commercial jingle on TV, or you might see a message on the side of a passing truck that suddenly makes unusual sense to you.

Your answer could come from kind or harsh words that someone you like–or dislike–speaks to you. Truth has its own strong integrity.

Your answer could come from the twisting shape of a playful cloud, or from a phrase in an inspirational book that leaps up at you as eagerly as your pet dog when you come home.

You could write it down in the form of a few scribbled words on a pad by your bed, when you jump up wide-awake from an unusual dream at 4 in the morning.

The key can be to grab hold of these honest words of Christ:
“I am your friend.”

Apply this fact to Whoever you believe in, or are trying to believe in. Imagine that all people, voices, guilts and fears that try to tell you differently are washed away in a pure, clean stream.

Remain open to your results. They will come. If not immediately, then sooner or later.

It’s promised.

Keep your faith my friend.
